Gliding Status report

I’ve converted into the LS4a! Yay! I even managed a 64 minute flight my fist go. It flies beautifully.

Here is the OLC for the LS4 flight: Online Contest LS4 Flight

Yesterday, I managed to break the new trim spring in the Junior 🙁

Gliding Status Report

It has been an extremely long time since I’ve done one of these reports. Never fear, I am still flying. Due to the posting to Adelaide, it has been more sporadic (mainly to maintain currency).

Now that I’m back in Melbourne, I should be able to do more flying. I did my annual check last week, so I’m good for another year. I’ve also started powered flying lessons (more on that later).

Totals: 62h54 (28h52 PIC) over 170 (44) flights.

Gliding Status Report

I know it has been a while. I’ve moved to Adelaide, commuting to Melbourne for the weekends. Haven’t done much flying, except for 3 and a bit hours at Porepunkah.

Yay! I’ve done my conversion flight in the SZD-50-3 Puchacz (one step closer to the single seat SZD-51 Junior). Two flights, 13 and 18 minutes.

Totals: 28h23 (6h26 solo) over 93 (23) flights.

Gliding Status Report

Just one flight today, of 23 minutes in the K13. It looks as though I’ll be in the K13 a while longer, as I haven’t done the requisite number of hours (even though I’ve done the number of flights). I need about 4 more hours in the K13, so I should really only go out on good days.

Even then, I’ll be in the Puchacz, not in the Junior (a bit of a setback, but hey, rules are rules)

Totals: 27h52 (5h55 solo) over 91 (21) flights.

Gliding Status Report

I haven’t written one of these in a while, so here goes..

Since the last GSR, I’ve done one flight on the winch, and three solo aerotow flights. The Last solo flight was interesting beause I erroniously left the break off too late, too low. Ended up having to land on the cross strip. Embarrasing.

Totals: 27h29 (5h32 solo) over 90 (20) flights.

Gliding Status Report

Today I had two winch launches, full control over the whole launch. The first one I got a little excited in the transition, and pulled up to quickly. The second one was better, but the initial climb was too flat.

I managed to get the PDA to talk to the club’s Volkslogger. It seemed to require 4800b, not the 19200b that the OzFlarm requires.

Totals: 26h34 (4h44 solo) over 86 (17) flights.

PDAs and Gliding

I’ve got a little project going at the moment to get a PDA working with the gliders.

I’ve got See You Mobile running on a borrowed Acer n30. The first attempt at connecting it to the volkslogger didn’t work (I was using a slimline gender-bender). The second attempt with a home-made null modem cable worked, connected to the on-board OzFlarm

I have to devise a way of having the PDA operational in flight, where it won’t come up and hit me in the scone! I was thinking of some straps and excessive use of velcro.

Gliding Status Report

Since the last GSR, I’ve done some training .. four winch launches and a general training flight for the post-solo syllabus.

The last winch launch got a little exciting, as we had a real life cable break! It was (fortunately) just after separation, so we were at most 2-3 ft off the ground. As for the winch training, I’m up to taking control just after the transition to full climb.

Totals: 26h19 (4h44 Solo) over 84 (17) flights.

Gliding Status Report

Saturday I was trying for my 30minute flight for my B certificate. 4 Attempts, and no joy 🙁 17,13,13,21 minutes

Sunday I had one 14 minute flight and one 53 minute flight! Yay!

Totals: 24h55 (3h58 Solo) from 77 (15) flights

Gliding Status Report

On Saturday:

Due to my enthusiasm for a winch launch I only managed one flight – a hanger flight from runway 01 to runway 27 for a duration of 19 minutes. (The winch broke just before our launch .. dammit)

On Sunday I had my first taste of wave lift. Unfortunately, it was only a taste, as by the time I got there, it had peatered out 🙁 Two flights today, one of 25 minutes, and a hanger flight for 18.

Totals: 22h44 (1h47 solo) over 71 (9) flights.

Gliding Status Report

Today I managed three flights, 14, 8 and 14 minutes, all solo.

As I have already completed my A certificate (16 years ago, mind you), I didn’t need the daily checks. (It helps that I have flown quite a few times with today’s duty instructor.

I need to work on the landing finesse (getting the aiming point right) in high wind situations. I’m sure that I’ll get some practice at that over the next few months.

Totals: 21.7 hours, (1.5 solo) on 68 (8) flights

Gliding Status Report

Well, I have started gliding again (mid January). And, no not that dangerous hang gliding. The real deal.

I did gliding as kid in 1990. I Currently have 65 launches, and 21.1 hours. (Including 5 launches and 52 minutes as pilot-in-command or solo flights)

I went solo yesterday for the first time in sixteen years. It was a short flight of 14 minutes (there was very little lift – about half a knot up surrounded by 3-4 knots of sink).
